3 Holiday Eating Tips – For the Compliant Patient

November 21, 2012 in Health, Patient Adherance/ Compliance

The holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas are upon us. Aside from the obvious reason of having the day off (a day of reflection and giving thanks and giving), it’s also a holiday off for celebration, spending time together as a family, and EATING.

Mmmmm, can  you smell it? The baked ham and turkey slow cooking in the oven…the potato salad, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and dressing/stuffing?…and oh! Over there, is that…no, it can’t be, is it CHEESECAKE, CHOCOLATE CAKE and PIE?? Oh MY!

Yes, for some, that is going to be the feast that is laid out before them this holiday (among many other items that I’ve left off). But, if you notice, some of those aren’t exactly on the menu for some chronically ill patients out there. So what to do? Here are a few holiday eating suggestions for patients. October 7, 2012 in Health, Move Forward, Patient Adherance/ Compliance

Well, it’s been a while since we’ve done a video. We’ve done two. One we’ve done was a four part series on “Communicating with Your Doctor” and the other was “Your Child the Patient”. Starting tomorrow, we will embark on a three part video on YouTube: “Who’s in Your Corner?” – we’re going to take a look at those who are your caregivers (family and professional). Are they energy boosters? Or energy drainers? And tips on how to deal with it! Stay tuned!! Oh, and, tell people about it so that they can watch along with you :-)

It’s up! View Part 1 here

The Meaning of “Living Well”

March 15, 2012 in Health, Move Forward, Patient Adherance/ Compliance, Uncategorized

Live Long And Prosper

Most people in their lives have caught at least one episode of “Star Trek”. Just in case you haven’t, there is one line that Dr. Spock is famous for saying, and that’s “Live long and prosper”.

It’s funny that he would utter those words. Centuries before he made that line famous, there was written inside of a tiny little book, words of the same wisdom:

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. – 3 John 1:2

With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. – Psalm 91:16

Here lies the difference in these two verses. The “Elder” John wishes that we would be in good health and that our souls will prosper. But in Psalm, our God promises that those who acknowledge Him will have long life (prosperous health).

There’s a lot to be said about living well…but what does it mean to “live well”, to “prosper and be in good health”, and to have “long life”? As a patient who is constantly barraged with bouts of illness, pain, and worry, this can seem out of reach for many. If you are a care giver, I bet you may feel that it’s a never ending battle and that “living well” is far beyond your reach.

Living well is not only a state of mind, but a state of spiritual health, a state of environment, a state of support, and a state of culture. That’s right, living well is just not a physical thing. Have you ever tried and tried to lose weight, eat healthy, or maybe exercise and take your meds like you are supposed to – but for what ever reason, it’s just not “clicking”?  Well, let’s quickly explore these few “states” shall we? Is There A Connection Between Faith and Health?

February 27, 2012 in Faith, Health, Patient Adherance/ Compliance

As we roll out our new site, I would like to kick off with a re-start to writing on the blog. People often ask “what do you do?”. Depending on who I’m talking to, my reply is “I’m a ‘Faith and Health’ coach”. As we both stand there in the awkward silence, I wait for the question that I know is coming next….”what’s that?“.

While that is a fair question, I wish more people would ask “Is there a need for that?”. That question is so much easier, because I can point to statistics and articles that show numbers and explanations. You see, the connection between faith and improvement in health has been studied over and over, and they keep coming up with the same results: People who include faith into their healthcare have better outcomes than those who don’t.

Scientists are finally catching up with what people already know—a personal relationship with God helps us make sense out of illness. It gives hope. It changes health-related behavior and thus reduces the risk of disease. – Christian Medical Association “Standards 4 Life” Faith and Health Publication

Mental Keys For Healthy Living

February 27, 2012 in Health, Move Forward, Patient Adherance/ Compliance

Do you see this guy right here? His name is “Life”. His main job is to constantly throw you curve balls. He does his job quite well, I might say. Often times, he catches people off guard and strikes them out.

But not you! Do you know why? Because you read my blogs *hear the crowd cheer you for your home run!*  But seriously. As a patient, you have to always be ready for life. Staring directly at the curve ball, you watch where it’s going, connect and drive it right out of the park.

So, what are the essential tools needed? Read the rest of this entry →

When Helicoptering Doesn’t Rescue – Giving Your “Sick” Child Wings

February 27, 2012 in Health, Newsletters and Freebies, Patient Adherance/ Compliance

Plainly put, being a sick teen sucks with a capitol “S”. I know, I’ve been there. There’s nothing you want more than to just be normal. I wanted to eat, and hang out, and play sports or do after school activities. But instead, I had half days because being on dialysis wiped me out much of the day. Being “different” was hard. Having an over protective family was harder.

So as a parent, what do you do? You want the best for them. You hassle them to keep up with their meds. You try to make them comfortable and maybe even start to do their responsibilities. Well, here’s my suggestion – STOP IT!

I can see the expressions now – maybe of shock or utter “oh no she di-n’t” face. But let me give you some reasons why I say so. Read the rest of this entry →
