Aside from the obvious reason of having the day off (a day of reflection and giving thanks and giving), it’s also a holiday off for celebration, spending time together as a family, and EATING.

Mmmmm, can you smell it? The baked ham and turkey slow cooking in the oven…the potato salad, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and dressing/stuffing?…and oh! Over there, is that…no, it can’t be, is it CHEESECAKE, CHOCOLATE CAKE and PIE?? Oh MY!

Yes, for some, that is going to be the feast that is laid out before them this holiday (among many other items that I’ve left off). But, if you notice, some of those aren’t exactly on the menu for some chronically ill patients out there. So what to do? Here are a few holiday eating suggestions for patients.

Call ahead to see what will be on the menu. This can give you a chance to bring substitutes if need be.

Ask the host or hostess if it would be ok to bring your own specially cooked food. Of course you can bring more for others if you’d like.

Eat before going to the dinner. This way you eat what your diet requires, and with the doctors ok, maybe you can have a SMALL treat and still feel like you are in the festivities.

I hope this helps. Have a great holiday!!

Until next time,

Deidra
